Inert versus reactive stone
Carbonate stones such as marble and limestone dissolve slowly and raise water hardness and pH. Quartz and granite-type pebbles are inert and hold water chemistry steady. A drop of vinegar that fizzes on the stone indicates carbonate content.
Grain size and shape
5–10 mm suits planted tanks and lets roots anchor. Larger grades look good in bowls and display layers but trap waste more readily. Avoid sharp crushed material where bottom-dwelling species are kept.
Before it goes in the tank
Rinse in plain water until it runs clear. Never use soap or detergent — residues are harmful and hard to remove from porous stone.
