Pebbles for Ponds and Fountains
Ponds need stone in two roles: a natural-looking edge that conceals the liner, and a base layer that gives the pond visual depth. The two are usually different sizes — larger rocks at the edge, smaller pebbles across the base.
In planted or fish ponds, the stone should be inert and free of dust. Rinse everything before it goes in, and avoid crushed material with sharp edges near liners.

Suitable pebble types
- River rocks
- Natural river pebbles
- Black pebbles
- Quartz pebbles
Recommended sizes
20–50 mm across the base; 80 mm and above for edging and concealment.
Recommended finish
Natural finish suits naturalistic ponds; polished suits formal basins.
Colour selection
Mixed natural tones look more convincing in a naturalistic pond than a single colour.
Quantity considerations
Base cover of a single stone layer, plus edge stone by running metre.
