Pebbles for Garden Landscaping
Decorative stone does three jobs in a garden at once: it suppresses weeds, it stops soil splashing onto walls and paving during rain, and it gives the planting a defined edge. That combination is why pebbles have largely replaced open soil in Indian display gardens.
The main design decision is contrast. Pale stone against dark paving and green planting reads crisp; mid-tone stone recedes and lets the planting lead. Both work — what rarely works is matching the stone closely to the paving, which flattens the whole composition.

Recommended sizes
10–30 mm for most beds; 30–50 mm where a chunkier texture is wanted.
Recommended finish
Natural finish for large open areas; polished where beds are seen at close range.
Colour selection
Choose one field colour for the majority of the area and use a second colour only as a deliberate band or border.
Quantity considerations
Plan on 40–60 mm depth. As a guide, 100 sq ft at 50 mm depth is roughly 0.47 cubic metres before allowance for settlement.

Installation tips
- 1Level and lightly compact the soil, removing existing weed growth.
- 2Lay a permeable geotextile membrane, overlapping joints by about 100 mm.
- 3Install an edge restraint so stone does not migrate into lawns or drains.
- 4Spread stone evenly to the planned depth and rake level.
Maintenance
- Rinse in the dry season to lift dust.
- Remove leaf litter before it breaks down within the stone layer.
- Top up shallow patches every year or two.
