Pebbles for Water Features
Water changes stone. Colours deepen, texture reads more strongly, and material that looked ordinary dry can become the focal point of a feature. Black and dark grey stone gain the most from this effect, which is why they dominate contemporary water design.
The practical concerns are movement and cleaning. Stone that is too small washes into pumps and outlets; stone too large leaves visible gaps in shallow water.

Recommended sizes
20–50 mm inside the water body; larger rocks as placed accents.
Recommended finish
Polished stone holds its appearance best where it is permanently wet.
Colour selection
Dark stone gives depth and hides algae staining longer than pale stone in outdoor features.
Quantity considerations
Aim for a single continuous layer, roughly 1.5 times the stone diameter in depth.

- 1Rinse stone thoroughly before placing it in the feature to avoid clouding the water.
- 2Keep pump intakes screened and clear of loose stone.
- 3Place larger rocks first, then fill between them with smaller material.

- Check the pump intake during each cleaning cycle.
