Application guide

Pebbles for Pathways and Walkways

A pebble path fails for one of two reasons: the stone is too large to walk on comfortably, or there is no edge restraint and the material spreads. Both are easy to avoid at the specification stage.

For paths used daily, keep the loose stone shallow and firm. Where the path is decorative rather than functional, larger grades and deeper beds are fine.

Suitable pebble types

  • Natural river pebbles
  • Decorative gravel
  • Stone chips
  • Grey pebbles

Recommended sizes

10–20 mm is the most comfortable underfoot. Avoid grades above 30 mm on walked routes.

Recommended finish

Natural or crushed. Polished stone is slippery when wet and is not recommended for paths.

Colour selection

Mid-tone grey and buff hide dust and footmarks best on routes that are used every day.

Quantity considerations

Lay 40–50 mm deep. A 1 m wide, 10 m long path at 50 mm needs roughly 0.5 cubic metres.

Installation tips

  1. 1Excavate to allow for a compacted sub-base plus the stone layer.
  2. 2Compact a crushed stone sub-base for routes carrying regular traffic.
  3. 3Fit timber, metal or concrete edging along both sides.
  4. 4Lay the decorative layer last and compact lightly.

Maintenance

  • Rake weekly in the first month while the surface settles.
  • Top up wheel tracks and desire lines annually.
