Application guide

Pebbles for Planters and Flower Beds

In a planter, pebbles serve two separate purposes and the material for each is different. At the bottom, coarse stone creates drainage void. At the top, a fine decorative layer holds moisture in the soil, keeps it from washing out during watering and finishes the pot visually.

For indoor planters, a polished or tumbled top dressing in a fine grade almost always looks better than large stone, which overwhelms the scale of the pot.

Suitable pebble types

  • Polished pebbles
  • White pebbles
  • Coloured pebbles
  • Drainage pebbles

Recommended sizes

5–20 mm for top dressing; 20–40 mm for the drainage layer at the base.

Recommended finish

Polished or tumbled indoors; natural finish for outdoor beds.

Colour selection

White and black read best against green foliage indoors. Use one colour per planter group.

Quantity considerations

A 20–25 mm top dressing is enough. Depth beyond that hides the pot rather than finishing it.

Installation tips

  1. 1Place coarse stone over the drainage holes before adding potting mix.
  2. 2Leave 25–30 mm below the rim for the decorative layer.
  3. 3Keep top dressing slightly clear of plant stems.

Maintenance

  • Lift and rinse the top dressing when it collects soil residue.
  • Check drainage holes have not blocked.
