Best Pebble Sizes for Garden Paths
10–20 mm is the answer for most paths. The reasoning matters more than the number.

Why size governs comfort
Walking on loose stone is comfortable when the pieces are small enough to bed together but large enough not to lodge in shoe treads. That window is roughly 10–20 mm for rounded pebbles.
Above 30 mm the stones roll underfoot. Below 8 mm they migrate into the house on every visitor's shoes.
Rounded or angular
Angular chips interlock and form a firmer surface, which is why they are used on driveways and slopes. Rounded pebbles look softer and more natural but need a well-detailed edge to stay in place.
Depth and edging
Lay 40–50 mm over a compacted sub-base. Deeper loose stone feels unstable rather than luxurious. Every path needs a continuous edge restraint — timber, metal or concrete — set just above the finished stone level.
