How to Stop Weeds Growing Through Garden Pebbles

A membrane stops weeds from below. Most weeds in pebble beds arrive from above.

Where the weeds come from

A membrane blocks weeds rooted in the soil below. It does nothing about windblown seed landing on top of the stone and germinating in accumulated dust and organic debris — which is how most pebble-bed weeds start.

Depth helps

A 60–75 mm layer makes it much harder for a seedling to reach soil before it exhausts itself. Thin beds of 25–30 mm are the ones that need constant weeding.

The routine that works

  • Rake the surface every few weeks to disturb seedlings early
  • Remove leaf litter before it breaks down into compost within the stone
  • Hand-pull the few that appear — they lift easily from loose stone
  • Top up the depth when the membrane starts showing through
