Contrast as a design tool
Against pale paving, cream render or timber, a band of black stone reads as a drawn line. That is why it appears so often around plunge pools, entrance courts and linear water channels in contemporary Indian projects.
Heat is a real consideration
Dark stone absorbs and radiates heat. In Jaipur, Ahmedabad or Nagpur, avoid large black expanses immediately beside seating or in areas crossed barefoot. Keep it to defined bands and shaded zones.
Where it earns its cost
Wet black stone is close to lacquered. If the project has water — a rill, a bowl, a spillover edge — that is where the polished black grade justifies itself.
