Why white works
White stone reflects light into shaded courtyards, makes green planting read sharper and gives dark paving a defined edge. In narrow side gardens between buildings, it is often the cheapest way to make a space feel less enclosed.
The maintenance trade-off
White shows everything: dust, soil splash, leaf staining and algae in damp shade. In high-dust cities, plan a rinse every few weeks during the dry season, or choose a grade large enough to hose clean easily.
Getting more life out of a white bed
- Lay over a permeable membrane so soil cannot wash up into the stone
- Choose 20–30 mm rather than fine grades under trees
- Keep the bed slightly below the surrounding paving so run-off does not carry silt across it
- Rake and rinse before the monsoon rather than after
