How to Choose Pebbles for Garden Landscaping
Type, size, colour and depth — the four decisions that determine whether a pebble bed still looks good in its third year.

Start with the job the stone has to do
Decorative stone is asked to do several things at once: suppress weeds, stop soil splashing during rain, define the edge of planting and look considered. Deciding which of those matters most on your site narrows the choice quickly.
If weed suppression is the priority, depth and a membrane matter more than colour. If appearance leads, contrast against the surrounding paving is the decision that carries the design.
Choosing the size
Size is the decision people most often get wrong. Anything below 10 mm scatters and travels on shoes; anything above 30 mm is uncomfortable to walk on and shows the membrane through the gaps unless laid deep.
- 5–10 mm — planters, interiors, aquariums
- 10–20 mm — general garden beds and light-traffic paths
- 20–30 mm — decorative beds cleaned by hosing
- 30–50 mm — feature areas and borders
- 50 mm and above — statement beds, pond edges, dry stream beds
Colour and finish in Indian conditions
White gives the strongest contrast but shows dust fastest — a genuine consideration in Delhi, Jaipur or Ahmedabad, less so in Bengaluru or Kochi. Mid-tone grey and mixed natural blends stay presentable longest between cleaning.
Polished stone looks best where it is seen close up and cleaned regularly. Across a large open garden the gloss is barely visible from normal viewing distance, so natural finish is usually the better value.
Depth and quantity
Plan on 40–50 mm depth for decorative cover and 60–75 mm where weed suppression matters. As a reference point, 100 sq ft at 50 mm depth is approximately 0.47 cubic metres of material before any allowance for settlement.
Add 5–10% to the calculated figure. Stone settles into soft ground, and site wastage on any real project is never zero.
