For planters, 50–75 mm is common; for French drains, the trench design governs. Follow your consultant's detail where one exists.

Can decorative pebbles be used for drainage?

Physically yes, but there is no reason to pay for a decorative finish on stone that will be buried.

Any planted area that cannot drain freely will eventually kill the planting above it. Drainage pebbles create the void space water needs to move away — under planter beds, behind retaining walls, around perforated pipes and beneath terrace gardens.

The right grade depends on the job. Fine material clogs; oversized material lets soil wash through. A geotextile separation layer between soil and stone solves most problems.
