Pebble stone sizes
Size decides how a pebble surface behaves underfoot, how well it stays in place and how easily it is cleaned. Sizes are nominal bands — natural stone is graded, not machined, so expect variation within each band.
10–20 mm
The general-purpose grade for paths and beds.
20–30 mm
Decorative beds and areas cleaned by hosing.
30–50 mm
Chunkier texture for borders and feature areas.
50–80 mm
Statement ground cover and pond edging.
80–120 mm
Large decorative stones and dry stream beds.

Choosing a size
Walked-on paths
20–30 mm holds together better underfoot than fine grades, which migrate and scatter.
Planters and interiors
5–10 mm and 10–20 mm sit neatly around stems and read as a finished surface.
Feature areas and borders
30–50 mm and above give shadow and texture that reads from a distance.
Drainage and soakaways
Larger, angular or unpolished grades keep voids open for water movement.
