How Much Pebble Stone Do I Need?

Area × depth gives volume. Everything after that is an estimate — here is how wide the range is.

The calculation

Multiply the area by the depth. A 10 ft × 10 ft bed is 100 sq ft, or 9.29 sq m. At 50 mm depth that is 0.46 cubic metres.

To convert to weight, multiply the volume by the bulk density. Most decorative stone falls between 1.4 and 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre, so that bed needs roughly 0.65 to 0.74 tonnes.

Why the answer is a range

Bulk density varies with stone type, grading and how much void space sits between pieces. Larger grades have more void and weigh less per cubic metre than fine gravel. Compaction and settlement into soft ground add further variation.

Practical allowance

Add 5–10% over the calculated figure for settlement and site wastage. Use the quantity calculator on this site to do the arithmetic, then send the result to us on WhatsApp so we can sanity-check it against the product you have chosen.
