Pebble Sizes, Coverage and Quantity Planning

Quantity is where most first orders go wrong: stone is bought by weight, but sites are measured in area. This hub covers size bands, sensible depths and how to convert an area into an approximate tonnage so a quotation reflects the real requirement.

Start with the calculator, sanity-check the depth against the size band you have chosen, then send the figure across so freight can be quoted for your destination.

How to work through pebble sizes, coverage and quantities

  1. 1

    Measure area first

Length × width for each zone. Irregular beds are easier to estimate zone by zone than as one shape.

  2. 2

    Choose a depth

Depth has to cover the base completely; larger stone generally needs a deeper layer than fine grades.

  3. 3

    Convert to weight

Area × depth gives volume; multiplying that volume gives an approximate tonnage to quote against.

  4. 4

    Allow for topping up

Stone settles and spreads. Ordering slightly over avoids a second small consignment at higher freight cost.
