River Pebbles vs Gravel
Rounded or angular is not a style choice. It changes how the surface behaves.

Shape decides stability
Angular gravel pieces lock against each other and form a firm surface. Rounded pebbles roll past one another, which is why they migrate on slopes and feel loose underfoot.
Where each belongs
- Driveways and slopes — angular gravel or chips
- Decorative beds and borders — river pebbles
- Paths — either, depending on whether comfort or firmness leads
- Drainage trenches — clean angular or rounded stone, both work
Appearance and cost
Gravel reads utilitarian; pebbles read decorative. Gravel usually costs less per tonne and covers more area at a given depth because the pieces pack tighter.
