Living and building on the backwaters
Alappuzha's identity is inseparable from Kerala's backwater network, and that network shapes the town's landscaping needs in a way few other Indian markets face: much of the usable land here sits at or very close to the water table, houseboat jetties and waterfront resort properties are built directly alongside canals and lagoons, and heavy monsoon rainfall on top of an already-high water table means drainage is the very first consideration in almost any landscaping conversation, well before appearance enters the discussion.
