Hillside landscaping above the Doon valley
Mussoorie's landscaping work is defined by its terrain as much as by its tourism economy. Perched along a ridge above the Doon valley, the town's hotels, heritage cottages and long-established boarding schools sit on steep plots where a garden or pathway has to be engineered to survive gravity and monsoon water as much as it has to look attractive to a visitor. This is not a flat-lawn market — nearly every landscaping brief here involves some element of slope stabilisation, drainage or terraced pathway work built into the design from the start.
Properties around Mall Road and the older Landour cantonment area, in particular, often retain colonial-era stone retaining walls and pathways that new landscaping has to work sympathetically around rather than replace outright, given how much of the town's charm depends on that older stone character being preserved.
