Building on slopes in one of India's wettest places
Shillong sits among rolling hills in Meghalaya, a state that records some of the highest rainfall figures anywhere in India, and this single fact shapes almost every landscaping decision made here. Very few plots in and around the city are genuinely flat — homes in Laitumkhrah, Upper Shillong and Nongthymmai are typically built into a slope, with gardens, driveways and approach paths following the contour of the land rather than a level layout. That combination of extreme rainfall and sloped ground means stone selection here is driven far more by function — staying in place, managing water — than by pure decoration.
